Wildman Equine Dentistry

Horses teeth are continually erupting and with almost constant grinding (remember horses and ponies are grazing animals and will do this for 16-18 hours a day in the wild) some wear anomalies and overgrowths commonly occur. A twelve month check will ensure these are dealt with effectively. Wildman Equine recommends a dental examination at the time of vaccination or as part of our annual Health Scheme.

A veterinary dental examination is not confined to the teeth. Other diseases of the oral cavity, if present, will be diagnosed at the same time. Therefore an annual veterinary dental examination is effective prevention of other oral disease.

We are equipped with rasps and floats for routine rasping, mechanical burrs for more intensive remedial work and perform extractions when this treatment is necessary. Our digital radiography is invaluable in diagnosis of the more painful and complex dental problems such as tooth root abscesses and root fractures.

Paraprofessionals such as Equine Dental Technicians work to a high standard and we work closely with many of them. In the case of sedation for EDT’s we have a duty of care as Veterinary Surgeons to any horse under our care and in particularly one we have sedated regardless of the procedure and who is performing it. Our priority will always be for the patient.
